Chapter 1628: Survive
Chapter 1628: Survive
Ning could hear the heavy footsteps of the corpse that stood up, ready to walk again, but he could also hear the sound of a dazed young girl who began to wake up.
"Who..." she spoke, her muffled voice getting into Ning's ears through the stack of paper that had covered his ears. He was beginning to lose consciousness as he could not breathe at all.
'Shara...' he thought. 'Help me. Freeze them.'
He couldn't even mumble those words anymore. He was barely keeping his eyes open, not that they could see anything.
He felt a soft vibration on the ground, and then a loud thud. Something fell to the ground. He heard a scream, which sounded like Shara's scream. He hoped she wasn't hurt at all. Then, a few moments later, the paper on his face loosened and he could finally breathe again.
Ning took a long deep breath as it opened up. He gained his consciousness back and then his vision.
"Are you okay? Are you alive?" Shara asked as she peeled away the paper from his face. None of the paper she peeled away landed on his face again. They simply fell to the floor, lifeless.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
He looked at her, worried and somewhat tired. He then looked toward the corpse that was fully frozen and had dropped to the side.
"My hands," he said. "Get rid of these."
Shara quickly wiped his hands and the paper fell off from it. He could finally clear his own face, only the paper he tried to take off landed back on his face.
'What the hell?' Ning thought, confused.
Shara did the same, and the paper didn't come back. 'What is she doing?' he thought. 'How is the paper not sticking for her?'
Ning didn't understand if this was a sort of rule for how the powers worked. It could very well be that the paper couldn't be taken away by the person it was used on, but if someone else helped, it worked.
But... Shara was special enough that Ning did not believe that to be the case.
Shara had to be doing something that he didn't know about. Something that only she could do.
He looked at the frozen corpse and back at the bald man who was staring at them with wide eyes.
"He's not attacking you?" Ning asked.
"He threw those papers on me, but they didn't stick," the girl said. "He hasn't tried anything else. What is happening here?"
"They're trying to take you away," Ning said. "But I'm not sure yet why. What did the old man tell you?"
"He said... he said the power I have is the one that my father had," the girl said.
"And? What is it called?" Ning asked. This was a matter of 20 points.
"He didn't say. He said I would find out soon. I don't remember much after that. I think I fell asleep," the girl said.
"He might have used his powers on you," Ning said but immediately changed his opinion. Seeing how the bald man's powers weren't working on Ning thanks to Shara, it was very likely that the old man hadn't used his powers on Shara either.
He knew more than well enough to know that his power didn't work on Shara. "Did he feed you the water?" he asked. "He might have put something on it."
"I... don't remember," Shara said, finally picking away the last piece of paper from Ning's body.
Ning pulled his spear up and pushed Shara behind her to look at the bald man.
The bald man waited, watching Ning and Shara. He hadn't moved for a while, staring occasionally toward his corpse whose body was inhabited by the Spirit he had bound.
"Going against the department is a big mistake," the man said. "Both of you will be in serious trouble if you keep this up."
"Is that so?" Ning asked. "Then come stop us."
He found confidence now that he knew that the man's powers had a counter in Shara. The man knew that too and frowned deeply. He didn't know what exactly he could do here.
Ning looked at the man who wasn't doing anything and frowned. "He's waiting for help," he said, realizing the situation. "He's waiting for people to come here."
"What?" Shara asked. "More people? Can we fight them?"
Ning shook his head. "No, we need to run away," he said. "Is your gold coins on you?"
"Always," she said.
"Great," Ning replied. "Time to run away."
Shara began to move to the side, ready to go for the door, but instead, Ning stopped her.
Ning reached out with his spear, causing the man to flinch back in response. He thought Ning was about to stab him with the spear.
Ning's only intention was to shut the door. The door slammed shut, but it wasn't completely shut.
"Freeze the door," Ning said.
"What?" Shara asked.
"The door, freeze it completely."
"Okay!" Shara said and used her power. A wave of white fog reached for the door and before
Ning knew it, the door was completely encased in ice.
"What now? We shut the door so we can't leave," Shara said.
"So, we leave through the window," he said and quickly walked up to the window, opening it
wide.
They were on the second floor, and the window led straight down to the back of the tavern which was just a back alley with rats and rotting trash.
"We'll jump down," he said.
"What?" Shara asked. "We'll break our legs if we jump from here."
"No, not if I use my powers," he said and jumped down.
Shara quickly ran to the window to see if he was hurt, only to see him standing in midair, on
top of a barrier.
"Come one, we need to hurry before they figure out."
Shara nodded and got her two feet out of the window before jumping down.
Ning caught onto her and nearly fell. Once she was stabilized, he took away the barrier and
created another one a bit far down. Once they landed there, he repeated it one more time until both of them were firmly landed on the alleyway.
