Vol. 11 - Chapter 548 - Interview, and a rundown of Rina and Mert’s situation
—Aha!
A surprised shout escaped inwardly.
Sure enough, Yumiki-senpai job was what I had expected—«Boundless Mobius», the top of the summit in the scout category.
Back in the game, I had relied on its features more often than not. With the job, along with its unique equipment «Mobius Strip», mapping advanced dungeons was like a matter of seconds. Needless to say, it earned it just fame in the game.
This, in fact, far outperforms Karua's «Peeping» skill. Well, it was like having one pair of eyes against a multitude of them. It was never gonna be a fair comparison in the end. To the end, it was the perfect scouting job one could have.
However, I had never thought someone in reality would actually be in possession of it. Like, the drop rate of «Mobius Strip» was abysmally low. Plus, to unlock «Boundless Mobius», the user would have to be the user of the standard high-ranking job «Seeker», while also being equipped with «Mobius Strip» while touching «Dragon Statute» to make it possible.
No wait, maybe I shouldn't go by my head canon. Perhaps, there was a past precedent already? Unlike using some very specific orb or item, as long the job was «Seeker» and item was «Mobius Strip»—both the tailor made for each other, after all—the route to advanced job «Boundless Mobius» was easy. This was actually how the playerbase, too, discovered the condition in the game.
"And to introduce ourselves."
Whoops, right, yes. It wasn't time to be impressed.
We turned to introduce ourselves.
"I'm Sierra, of «Combat Department Class 1-1», and sub-guildmaster of «Eden». My Job is—"
Sierra prompted the introduction, and came to pause at the explanation of the job. She took a glance at Yumiki-senpai, and quietly continued.
"—It's a secret."
"Aww, a pity."
Yumiki-senpai said with a playful tone.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
It seems she had been hoping to get us to reveal our job classes by offering hers first. How cunning! Truly the seeker of information from every nook and cranny, «Investigation Department».
Personally, I felt no need to keep them a secret. Others, including Lana and other members, however suggested their jobs weren’t something we could revealed lightly.
After all, whether it was Sierra's «Sanctified Shield Princess», or Ester's «Chariot Princess», they're both never-heard. It went the same for me, of course. Apparently, «Gloria Salvator» hadn't even appeared in any of the fairy-tales ever heard. It would be better to wait for a better channel to reveal them via than to create confusion. So, in the end, we were made to stop by Sierra.
We continued our self-introductions, keeping our jobs a secret.
However, during the introductions, I noticed another surprising fact. Our standard jobs should have already been well-known. After all, I had been called «Brave-kun» quite often, and during the entrance ceremony, a lot had seen my job list during the entrance ceremony.
Yet, the fact that she tried to naturally extract the information again meant that she had deduced we now had advanced classes just from watching that match.
She was sharp. Too sharp! I had to give it to her.
I mean, jobs were like a tool in one hand. And as much as «Boundless Mobius» abilities were all fantastic, analysis was not one of them. So she should have figured out that on her own.
My curiosity was piqued by her, very much so.
"Yumiki-senpai!"
"Yes, what is it, Brave-kun?"
"How about joining «Eden»?"
" " "!?" " "
"Huh, no wait. What in the world are you saying, Zephyr?"
Unwittingly, I found myself extending an invitation to our guild to Yumiki-senpai.
Everyone, saving Lulu, released a flabbergasted gasp, while Lana latched onto my right arm.
"Huh, I am just taking my chance to invite Senpai, she definitely has it in her for that."
I replied in short. I don't know anyone who would ever try to pass on the chance. If anything, it would be a shame to that person if they didn't attempt it after seeing her impressive talent, and abilities.
"This, let me get it straight. So, yeah, do not say anything for now."
Sierra appeared similarly confused by my sudden action, as she grabbed me by the left arm and urged me to calm down.
The next words I heard was from Yumiki-senpai, who continued with a giggle.
"Fufufu. Just the Brave-kun I knew. Goodness, I don't know a second person who would attempt inviting a senior, much less the one with an advanced job, so impromptu. As for me, I just like what I am doing right now. I really do appreciate your invitation, however I would decline here."
"—Rgh. Truly a pity."
She turned down my offer, still chuckling. Well, there wasn't a shred of hesitation when she turned down the offer, so I was sure there wasn't even a second chance. A deep groan escaped from my lips, feeling the disappointment.
Meanwhile, with a sigh of relief, Lana and Sierra detached themselves from my arms. Incomprehensibly, a corner of my mind was grasped by loneliness on the other hand.
"Anyway, so where was I?"
Sierra opened her mouth as if to reset the situation. However, it seemed the suddenness of the situation caused her to forget her topic. Though I believe that was hardly any shocking. But putting that aside, I mentally gave my apology for cutting her in her words.
"We're at self-introduction, inviting all the advanced job members. Please come here, we, the «Academy's Watchbird» of «Investigation Department Class 3-1», would now conduct the interview."
With that, Yumiki-senpai guided us to the sofa in the corner of the meeting room. She was completely assured we all had advanced jobs coming to this point.
Alright—no wait. I forgot, but we had one person without any advanced job. Right. My eyes unwittingly turned to Lulu.
Yumiki-senpai probably guessed my confusion, and explained, her hand tapping on her lips.
"As for the lil' hero, the academy newspaper is more interested in taking her interview than «Academy Watchbird»."
"Ah, yes! It's our extreme pleasure to interview hero Lulu-chan for the newspaper «The Drifting Breeze in the Academy»!"
The words come from two other boys and girls from behind Yumiki-senpai as they rose from their seats, pushing up the frames of their specs. Then the girl held Mick in her hand, while the boy grabbed the hold of his memo pad, seemingly for report. Their uniform's collar was embroidered green, making them the 2nd year.
Though a hero interview huh.
Oh, right. Speaking of, the two—«Academy's Watchbird» and «The Drifting Breeze in the Academy»—weren't guilds, but more like an organisation similar to «Variety Firm», run by students. That said, adults could be seen amidst the organisation too.
"Well, so this is the situation. The advanced job members, please come this way. Lulu-chan, you're their guest."
Yumiki-senpai summarised the situation and urged five of us to the sofa.
With a sigh, Sierra followed after Senpai, and the rest of us followed after her. In between, I caught Yumiki-senpai's glance turning toward Ester, making me a bit curious about her intent.
Coming to the sofa—they're laid in the arrangement of one three-seater sofa with three single seaters, two on either side and one facing the three-seater—Yumiki-senpai rested herself on a single-seater sofa, while we sat down on the other seats present.
"Then, with no further ado, let's begin the winner's interview, shall we. First of all, a very big congratulations to «Combat Department Class 1-1» on topping your block."
"Thank you."
And so, the interview finally began. Sierra responded to Yumiki-senpai's congratulation as our representative.
Hmm, why not I, the leader you ask? Because Sierra—don't ask me, even I don't get it—said she would be stepping up here.
"Not only did you achieve an unprecedented score of 2303 points, but the match itself ended in a record-breaking 42 minutes—an unheard-of result. I’d love to hear about your feelings and your commentary on the match. And, if possible, I’d like to ask about your advanced jobs and some personal details, too."
"There's not much to talk about advanced class yet. After all, the matches are on-going, and the more trump cards you have, the better it is, no? But anything else? No issue."
"I see. Then, may I first ask how you felt when the first block was decided? What were your thoughts when it happened—"
As the interview began, Yumiki-senpai’s «Mobius Strip» immediately sprang into motion, scattering around us. Presumably to capture our images from better angles. I guess she wanted to capture every single action, and words, of ours.
But, that was a feeling shared only by me. The other members just looked at «Mobius Strip» with a quizzical look. Not a surprise. Unless you know their function, they're nothing more than black spheres in other's eyes. Then again, I guess they would have to understand the concept of ‘Camera’ first to even link them together. There was nothing that could resemble that in this world—maybe, if you count that arena's screening, stretching it might be.
Anyway, since the interview lacked the missing element of nervousness without a camera, we all continued the conversation with barely any tension.
The overall interview was quite simple, keeping itself adhered to the questions regarding the match.
I thought we would have more questions about, like, our tactics, skill combination, plan et cetera. Nevertheless, it never came to it. The question remained within the realm of topic like 'how or what was our state of mind as we face the match?'
Similarly, our replies were on safer side, keeping anything but innocuous information out of the way.
Apparently, the winner's interview was a frequent thing in the Inter-class battle. The information obtained would then be used in the «Investigation Department» class battle itself. Albeit, I was unaware what sort of basis and all they judge them though.
Either way, I thought since she's come to take her chances on us, I would definitely like her to win in her class matches, however I was overpowered by the 'Do not speak more than necessary' vibe Sierra was channelling at full throttle. I could only be mum in this affair.
The interview came to an end after ten minutes.
"Thank you for your time today. And, if you don't mind, can I have your contact details? I would like to discuss if something else pops up."
"Of course. That's no problem."
"Likewise. I would rather insist on sharing contact details too! Also, the doors to our guild are always open if you have a change of mind!"
"Zephyr?"
"Heehee. This is my contact details then."
"Hehehe, well, here’s my contact information then."
After the interview, we exchanged contact information via our «Student Handbook» for probable contact later down the line. And again, she easily brushed aside my invitation. Alas.
Well, atleast Interview was quite a fresh experience, though the best part was still the encounter with Yumiki-senpai.
Well, as for Lulu—
"Right, I hopped in with a jump like this and blew them like wham! Like this, this 'hop-hop' is actually very important!"
She was still taking her interview, performing her adorable hopping.
I guess she was trying to replicate the scene of battle, but she looked so endearing that we were rather lost in her cuteness than anything. Plus, she wasn't holding any sword either, so it was like she was merely playing around. The two members of «The Drifting Breeze in the Academy» had a similar drooping smile on their faces.
Yumiki-senpai, with a big smile, turned «Mobius Strip» in Lulu's direction.
There wasn't even a question on who she was watching. Man, I was so envious of her to rewatch Lulu's adorableness from all angles. It's too unfair!
The next day, we, the «Class-1» came to the fifth arena to take a look at other classes' matches. It was the so-called gathering intel of opponents.
"Sure enough, the top rankers are Class-4 and Class-6."
"Now they're semi-final qualifiers, so they also fall into our 17th block."
Sierra next to me nodded at my murmuring.
Indeed, Block 17th to Block 20th were the semifinal blocks.
After advancing from the **First Block**, we would be facing other classes of the 17th Block in «Base Capture».
"Speaking of, what happened to the 6th arena?"
"Class-8 won it seems, just as presumed."
With «Student Handbook» on one hand, Sierra informed me. Class-8 was of Mert after all, and they won. The only class I was actually worried about was Rina's however.
"I hope it isn't much of a bumpy ride for Rina."
My murmur, however, met with a glaring present from Sierra for incomprehensible reason.
"I don't think you should be saying that. Not after allowing the use of «Dragon's Miniature Garden». I do not believe in a situation where she loses."
Right, I did allow her to use it. Sierra was initially hesitant, since it was our guild's secret and all, but we had used the guild's «Advanced Job Ascension Ticket», the same went to «Summon Disk», so there really was no reason why Mert or Rina couldn't.
Besides, even if it was exposed, «Dragon's Miniature Garden» was something that was operable from the base. The opponent would have to first breakthrough her strategy to deal with her. But, and more importantly, this would allow her a chance to earn more experience.
Sierra reluctantly gave her approval, too, with a sigh when I suggested it.
However, there was no end to the endless concern surging in my mind.
"You may be right, but we're talking about a mid-ranking class."
As much as Rina might have had the upper hand with «Dragon's Miniature Garden», her class wasn't exactly strong. Above all, she had expressed her desire to join us in Class-1. I could only pray for her with the best of my wishes.
Eventually, Rina's class, Class-51, emerged victorious in today's match, securing their seat for the semi-final. The state of the match was, well... too one-sided. That was all I could use to explain.
I guess my worries were indeed unfounded. I concluded she would have no contest to get the final's ticket.
"At this rate, we would be facing Mert and Rina's classes in the final huh."
"Isn't that great! It sounds fun!"
"Sheesh, it's not going to be an easy game, you know, right? I just hope you don't regret allowing the usage of «Dragon's Miniature Garden."
"Eh, just leave it to me! The «Dragon's Miniature Garden» wasn't as invincible as it seemed. I already have a strategy in my mind. Fortunately, we still have one day before the semi-final."
Tomorrow would be the 3rd day of the Inter-Class battle.
Fortunately, the matches of all the classes that had our guild members concluded within today, so now we could give the entire one day to train in on our strategy.
When I informed Mert and Rina we might be facing each other in the final, they replied 'we'll be doing our final preparation then.' and ventured into the Int-mid ranking dungeon «Beast Gathering» with Reglam, Noel, Lacritta and so on members.
They clearly displayed their fierce intent for the finale.
Well, well, just to my preference. The more they put in their effort, the more I would be looking forward to the last day of the Inter-Class battle!
Bring it on, I would be ready with our strategy as well!
