Chapter 309 - Guild In The Making
"What do you mean by that?"
One might think that Klautz was a cretin for not figuring out such a simple thing. But Klautz knew better. Being a resident of hell himself in his past life.
'They simply work in a different way. And it doesn't suit him to ask me to work for him.'
The way that mercenaries worked was indeed quite unique. Normally, every one of them were on their own. But whenever a mission worth working on groups popped up from time to time, these people formed small groups and tackled such a problem. Their teamwork was indeed broken due to this but it wasn't as shabby as the ninjas either. They could hold their ground.
'But why the heck would he ask me?'
One must not forget Klautz's position. He might be a bit strong but he was nowhere close. A mercenary like Gozoto would never want to team up with him. He would rather pick someone from his colleagues rather than Klautz.
Thus, Klautz's question was a genuine question that demanded answers despite its seemingly foolish appearance on the surface. Only someone who had lived in hell himself would know.
"I am sorry but I am not planning to do any mercenary work anytime soon," klautz shrugged.
'Mercenary work is fine and all. I get to work for myself and I don't have to bother with any annoying superiors or juniors. But there is very little opportunity for growth in such a thing.'
Klautz shook his head. It wasn't for nought that the mortality rate of such people was very high and the returns were never good. Guilds couldn't have become a powerful force out of nowhere.
After all, every powerful guild of today was once a group of mercenaries.
"Hmm, but that's not what I meant."
Gozoto shook his head as he showed his palm facing up..
"What I am proposing is for you to join my guild."
What a guild? A force that was a collection of humans where the strong shielded the weak to allow them to grow all the while both sides procure resources and monopolize them.
Indeed, it was true that if it was a guild that Gozoto was aiming for, Klautz could certainly join it albeit on the weaker side.
'Guild huh? Since when did such a thing pop up?'
Klautz squinted his eyes.
"Guild? Which guild did you join? What are you talking about?"
It couldn't help but come as a surprise to Klautz. He knew from his past life that Gozoto himself had never joined a guild after being infamous as a guild hopper. Not to mention that he had quite a bad reputation despite his strength for any of the top guilds to take him in.
"Nah, I didn't join one. This is my own baby."
Gozoto smirked.
"Th- That's impossible. Stop it with your jokes."
Klautz had definitely trouble believing it. A guild cannot just pop up overnight.
Creating a new guild wasn't child's play. Unlike a house like the Ackerman's, most members of the guild didn't share any ties of blood. What bought the members together was the opportunities that a guild provides.
Hell was a wild world, but humans didn't allow it to be an open world for long. Resources and trial grounds were monopolized, hunting grounds were properly guarded, denying entry to anyone who was not a member of the guild and much more.
Hell was dangerous in the first place, but the humans that lived in it made it harder for the others to survive. A monopolization of resources left the others with nothing in their hand. It was like a drought in a lush green world. Little by little everyone had no choice but to be sucked in this void called 'guild'.
"Do you have any of them? Any resources? Any members?"
Klautz felt that Gozoto was just making up everything about a guild to make him fall for some kind of trap that allowed Gozoto to exploit his potential.
It seemed that after Klautz's victory against Colt, Gozoto wanted him under his wing at any cost and thus went to the point of making a last ditch effort to create a guild out of nothing.
But joining a guild with no foundation was the last thing Klautz wanted to do. Such a thing would only topple over when the storm begins to blow.
'It looks like there are no other members in this guild of his other than himself,' klautz thought. Considering how hastily it was formed it certainly seemed like the only possibility.
But Klautz was wrong.
"Members? We have quite a few of them. You might know some of them already as they are newbies like you. When it comes to resources you don't have to worry about it. We would be gaining access to ample of them soon enough."
Klautz's ears twitched as he heard of the information but even this wasn't enough to convince him. A verbal promise was nowhere close enough to actually having the resources at hand. He wasn't going to fall for these cheap politics.
"Newbies? Don't make me laugh. You plan to start a guild with them?"
More than the resources, what a new guild needed the most was strength. Otherwise a new fledgling in the world of monopolies could only hope to be crushed by the high and mighty. The fast growing guild was enough to catch attention and causing its downfall as it was cornered from all sides.
'I was right. He is just fooling around.' That was they only conclusion Klautz could achieve.
Gozoto had quite a bad reputation for fooling around after all.'
There was no way such a guild could sustain itself. Not to mention the claim of getting resources seemed to be a fart. If it was so easy would everyone do it?
