Super Gene Ⅱ: Evolution

Chapter 106: 106 Mechanical Watches

Chapter 106: Chapter 106 Mechanical Watches

The two exchanged a glance, and Lin Shen nodded slightly. Wei Wufu took out a Pet Capsule and threw it.

The capsule landed on the ground and transformed into a metal dog. Under Wei Wufu’s command, the dog made a round inside, and nothing unusual was found.

Only then did the two proceed with relief, looking over various items inside.

Most other items didn’t seem special, just picking up a piece of clothing from the bed, its fabric had become brittle due to the passage of time and it fell apart with a gentle tug.

The rest wasn’t much better, which puzzled Lin Shen as all the furniture here was wooden, and the fabrics of clothes were either cotton or synthetic.

There wasn’t a trace of Base Mutation metal materials in these furniture and clothes.

This suggested that the furniture and clothes might be from over two hundred years ago.

Since the appearance of Base Variant Creatures, human commodities had slowly started to incorporate Base Mutation materials.

Aside from some specially required products, very few people made furniture purely out of wood, and most clothing was mixed with metal fibers for a degree of protection.

In this era, safety was of the utmost importance. Clothes made purely of cotton or synthetic materials had fallen out of favor.

Clothes mingled with metal fibers, at least, offered some defense against Steel Creatures.

Finding nothing else worthy of attention, Lin Shen turned his gaze to the dust-covered watch on the table, pulled out his Death Powder that transformed into a gun, and used the tip to lift the watch from the table.

The watch was easily lifted without anything strange happening, as dust fell everywhere.

After placing the lifted watch back on the floor and ensuring there were no abnormal reactions, Lin Shen finally relaxed and picked up the watch.

He carefully wiped off the dust, and the watch quickly revealed its true appearance.

Contrary to Lin Shen’s expectations, this watch was not like the black teleporter in design, though somewhat similar; the materials were completely different.

Whether it was a black or white watch, their dials were of the liquid crystal display style, while this one was a mechanical watch with hour, minute, and second hands. However, the circle of numbers on its dial was divided into 24 sections, unlike the ordinary 12-hour watch.

There was also a small window on the dial with numbers, presumably for displaying the date.

Both the strap and the body of the watch were metallic, and the glass covering the dial appeared no different from ordinary glass.

The hands were not moving; it seemed to be broken.

This disappointed Lin Shen, as it seemed to be just an ordinary mechanical watch that was also broken.

The time on the watch hands was frozen at 10:03, and the date was the 1st.

“At least it’s an antique, I wonder if it still works,” Lin Shen mused. He had a similar old-style mechanical watch at home that he wore for fun, finding it too cumbersome. After a few days, he stopped wearing it.

This kind of mechanical watch needed to be wound, and perhaps it wasn’t broken, just unwound for too long, which is why it had stopped.

He adjusted the time and then wound it up.

Whirr!

The moment Lin Shen finished adjusting and let go, the scenery around him blurred into a data stream, and everything was unclear.

“What the—!” The blurriness was over in an instant. As Lin Shen’s vision cleared, he found himself no longer in a cave.

What lay before him was a series of rolling grassy hills, one after another, like an endless sea of green desert dunes.

Of course, the grass on the hills was not ordinary vegetation, with roots and leaves made of green metal.

“This thing really is a teleporter!” Lin Shen looked at the watch in his hand, astonished.

Because this thing looked too much like an old-fashioned mechanical watch, its high-technology content was completely concealed.

Time was passing, but there was no countdown timer, nor did he know when it would teleport him back. He now dared not tamper with the watch again, lest more unpredictable events occur, so he stowed the watch away for the time being.

Looking around, he didn’t spot Wei Wufu’s figure; he didn’t know if Wei had not been teleported over or had been sent to some other location.

Fortunately, everything on his person was intact; the Death Powder wrapped around him, the Angel Revolver at his waist, and Fei Zai in his backpack were all present.

Lin Shen immediately used his Base Mutation powers, enveloping his whole body with the Steel Carapace. In such a place, survival was the top priority.

Remaining in a Base Mutation state could also stimulate the reinforcing and mutating effects of Evolution Theory.

As long as he didn’t use Super-Base Change, with the support of Evolution Theory, Lin Shen could almost maintain it indefinitely, which was already much stronger than the average Mutator.

A typical Mutator, at the least, could only maintain a Base Mutation state for a few hours, and at the most, for several dozen hours. According to the intensity of battle, increasing expenditure might reduce the duration even further, but none could maintain Base Mutation indefinitely like Lin Shen.

He took out three capsules from the Angel Revolver and activated them directly into Mutant Black Armored Centipedes, letting them scatter around to ensure his own safety.

He didn’t activate them with the Angel Revolver directly, as he feared the gunshot would attract unnecessary trouble.

After all this, Lin Shen finally breathed a sigh of relief, and ordered the three Mutant Black Armored Centipedes to scout out about fifty meters away from him, clearing the path around him like satellites, and began to crawl slowly towards a grassy slope ahead.

Standing atop the grassy slope, as far as he could see, there were endless undulating hills of grass that resembled waves, with only the odd large tree growing sporadically on the slopes, none of which resembled the places he visited on Realm King Planet before.

Below the slope, Lin Shen saw a group of Steel Chickens foraging for food.

They were indeed Steel Chickens, with feathers as dark and shiny as mysterious black iron, steel claws, and iron beaks—one peck ensured bleeding lacerations.

A dozen or so Steel Chickens wandered below the slope, occasionally pecking in the grass and swallowing whatever they found.

Lin Shen observed closely for a while before realizing that the Steel Chickens were feeding on a type of metallic insect.

These creatures were relatives of Lin Shen’s Mutant Black Armored Centipedes, also a type of centipede, albeit of a much lower Steel Level.

Lin Shen lacked interest in the Steel Chickens and Steel Centipedes since the materials from metal creatures were barely worth anything.

“One gets hungry after all this chasing and climbing; I’ll kill a couple of Steel Chickens and drink some Base Mutation Fluid to quell my hunger,” Lin Shen was about to descend the slope to kill a couple of the chickens when suddenly the chickens started clucking in alarm.

A colorful and patterned Giant Poisonous Multicolored Centipede, over a meter long, emerged from beneath the grass, biting a Steel Chicken and snapping its neck with one strike.

The remaining Steel Chickens were thrown into chaos, and within moments several more were bitten to death.

“This creature must be a mutant,” Lin Shen delightfully noted the Multicolored Iron Centipede.

After all, it was precisely such creatures he had come to Realm King Planet for.

Without hesitation, he sent one of the Mutant Black Armored Centipedes flying over to it.

Indeed, Mutant Black Armored Centipedes could fly, their wings like those of cicadas, typically tucked under their black carapaces.

No matter how large or mutated, the Multicolored Iron Centipede, being just of Steel Level, was no match for a Crystal Base Level Black Armored Centipede; it was killed instantly with a single strike.

When the Multicolored Iron Centipede was slain, Lin Shen felt the watch in his pocket vibrate. Pulling it out, he saw what looked like a transparent display on the surface of the glass, showing him some information.

“Killed a mutant steel creature, Giant Poisonous Multicolored Centipede. Detected Base Mutation Fluid containing toxins within Giant Poisonous Multicolored Centipede, not suitable for direct consumption.”

“How advanced!” Lin Shen marveled at the sophistication of the watch and whimsically said to the device, “Show me my own information.”

The watch actually received his command and displayed his information, just like before.

“Given the user’s weakness, please proceed with caution,” the watch even included a warm tip at the end.
